Category 5 (Cat5): Supports 100BASE-T Ethernet at speeds of up to 100 Mbps and is suitable for low-bandwidth applications.

Category 5e (Cat5e): An enhanced version of Cat5, supporting 1000BASE-T Ethernet at speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps).

Category 6 (Cat6): Supports 10GBASE-T Ethernet at speeds of up to 10 Gbps, offering higher bandwidth for demanding applications.

STP Cables

STP cables provide superior protection against EMI compared to UTP cables. They are typically used in environments with high levels of electromagnetic noise, such as industrial settings or near large electrical equipment. STP cables are classified into subcategories based on their shielding type:

Foiled Twisted Pair (FTP): Provides a wrap of aluminum foil around each twisted pair to shield against EMI.

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP): Features a braided shield around each twisted pair, providing enhanced EMI protection.

Screened Shielded Twisted Pair (SSTP): Has a metal screen around the cable’s core and an additional braid around each twisted pair, offering the highest level of EMI protection.

Fiber Optic Cables

Fiber optic cables transmit data using light pulses through optical fibers, providing significantly higher bandwidth and speeds compared to copper cables. Fiber optic cables are classified into two main types:

Single-mode Fiber (SMF): Uses a single, narrow beam of light for transmission, allowing for longer distances and higher bandwidths.

Multi-mode Fiber (MMF): Uses multiple paths of light to transmit data, resulting in shorter distances and lower bandwidths.

Choosing the right LAN cable depends on several factors, including:

Speed requirements: Determine the required data transfer speed for the application.

Distance: Consider the distance between devices to select a cable that supports the required transmission speed over the desired length.
